Biography

I am Jamila Estelle Friedrich, born on June 9, 1990, in Munich, Germany. Currently pursuing a Music Education degree at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in Los Angeles, I am passionate about singing, trumpet performance, and creative expression.
My family has a strong artistic heritage: my father is an actor and French horn player, my mother is an actor, violinist, ballet dancer, and Pilates instructor, and my grandfather, Heinz Friedrich, was the first Kammer singer at the Munich Opera, where he performed at the State Theater at the Gärtnerplatz and gained renown in both Munich and Berlin.

From 2005 to 2008, I performed with the Zurich Youth Choir, touring Cuba (America Cantat 2007), Utrecht in the Netherlands (2007), and South Korea (2008). I attended the Idyllwild Summer Arts Program four times, culminating in a 2007 concert with an orchestra at Disney Hall in Los Angeles. I joined the Burbank Chorale in 2010 and participated in a children’s choir in Los Angeles around 2014–2015, further broadening my choral experience. Since then, I’ve also sung with the Santa Clarita Methodist Church Choir and the Northridge Singers at CSUN (a choir ensemble, though not part of the CSUN Opera).

My operatic journey began in 2014 with the Independent Opera Company, singing in the choir for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, followed by Enrique Granados’s Goyescas in 2015. In Fall 2024, I joined the CSUN Opera for Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites and also performed with Mission Opera (not affiliated with CSUN) for Carlisle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree.

Beyond singing, I have been playing trumpet since the age of eight, performing with the Grüne Hügel Orchestra SGI-D in Germany and the Fife & Drum Corp SGI USA in Los Angeles. Piano has been a continuous thread in my music education, and I compose original piano pieces.
Additionally, I write poetry, as well as science fiction and fantasy stories.

Academically, I began my studies at Los Angeles Valley College and later transferred to Pierce College, where I graduated in 2022 with four Associate Degrees in General Education, Arts and Humanities, Behavioral Science and Psychology, and Music. Fluent in both German and English, I aim to inspire others worldwide through my music, educational endeavors, and creative storytelling—always embracing collaboration and passion in every new project.
